being down

Remember the creative process I talked about?

I think I have been stuck in the bottom of the creative process hump for a while now.  Partly by choice, mostly because we have been to busy CD making, holiday-ing, and moving.  Blah blah blah - lame excuses, I know.  However, it has been a rewarding period of time for me.  I always put so much emphasis and merit on doing, but sometimes I forget to put enough emphasis on not-doing.  Being down doesn't mean that you are lazy, it means that you are preparing yourself to go up.

While I was down (in a good way) I was trying to give myself a brutal and honest critique of my art.  I reflected on ways I want to improve and new things I would like to try.  This is an in-progress image of one of my first painting post the most recent "I suck" stage, but I hope that it leads me down a pathway I can feel even more proud of.

To be continued... dun dun dun!

  1. Caitlin,
It's encouraging to see that even in your "rut" you force yourself to keep moving forward. That's something that is really hard for me to do. If I have writer's block. I'm tempted to just stop writing and keep waiting for inspiration to hit, when I should just move forward. Write it out. Some of it might be really bad. But something really wonderful could (and probably will) come out of it. Like this painting...it is beautiful. I love it.

  3. I am a little confused about the fact that most of your paintings are naked. It isn't up to the standards that I would think you valued.

  4. I was first going to thank you for this encouraging post (and I still do) because I am in a painting rut myself)..but then I read the ANON post.

The Nude has been a subject of art since human beginning. The study of anatomy isn't pornographic. If you would kindly go to a museum, anon, you'll see that Caitlin isn't the first. Many Saints have been portrayed Nude. EVERYONE IN ANTIQUITY WAS NUDE. They aren't a representation of her (or any artist's) values.

    Have a great day, Caitlin.

  9. I'm in the bottom of a hump which is annoying as it suddenley happened, out of the blue, from nowhere.

But it's nice to know that I am not along in my down-ness. A little bit of positivity will get me back up there in no time.

And for what it is worth I think that painting is beautiful.

... but i always do :) thank you for reminding me.
