I'm like, so gifted

Please don't take me seriously, you know I'm almost always joking.  I'm just sitting in my studio calming down from my first ever case of Bieber Fever after watching "Never Say Never" while painting.  And no, my paintings did not all turn out purple and silver and totally insane.  So sorry to disappoint.

So, who has seen this movie and caught the same fever?  I got sucked in!  I laughed, I cried... and um, that's not a joke.  I was impressed by those little kid videos of him playing the drums and his amazing voice.  This made me think about something that Hum and I always discuss.  The ever lingering question of "hard work vs. being gifted".

Let's have a serious talk here, you and me.

I would say Hum and I are similar in our levels of "giftedness" if you will.  Bear with me here.  We were both passionate about art and music when we were little.  I loved to draw and often lost myself in my imagination behind closed doors.  Hum admired his older brothers that played in bands and quickly became obsessed with the guitar himself.  However, I wouldn't say either of us had any kind of talent someone would catch any kind of fever about.  So, the big question is... can we be as successful as someone who popped out of the womb singing show tunes and doing jazz hands? {wow... that is an amazing mental image}

Personally, I would like to think that anyone with passion, perseverance, and a strong dosage of hard work could be successful.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. i've participated in many a discussion of this same matter in creative writing classes. honestly? i think SO MUCH of it is good old-fashioned hard work. talent helps, but it won't get you anywhere without a little sweat. and those pictures of you two are adorable.

  2. i have crushed hard for the bieb. i blame it on being pregnant, but really, i just have the fever.

and i think it's a little bit of natural gift with a whole lotta work. lots of people waste their gifts (or at least never use them) because they don't put the umph into making it happen.

  3. thanks for you thoughts, I agree with both of you!

  4. THAT MOVIE! i was indifferent towards the beibs until i saw it (at the dollar theater, duh)... love. love, love, love. not enough to spend money on any of his music, but i think upon him fondly every now and then.

  5. i think there are those that are straight up talented (have you seen the four year old that plays the violin with the symphony?) and then there are the rest of us, who may have an inclination toward a hobby and then work their butts off to be great at it.

i on the other hand am just lazy.

    :)

  6. I think that, unless you're a bit of a phenomenon, people have certain inclinations and then hard work plays in. also, i think a huge part of people's success is who they know and how much exposure they get. someone could be a fantastic poet, but if they only know people who aren't interested in poetry (and never make connections with the people who are), they could work themselves silly and barely scrape the bottom of the barrel.

that sounds super negative but it's not! putting yourself out there and making connections (for me) is the hardest part of hard work, but everyone has to do it, whether they want to be a businessman, a professor, or a freelance artist. i mean, where would justin bieber be if he hadn't been posted all over youtube?

p.s. i am loving the glasses/sweatshirt combination in the first photograph.

  7. I couldn't agree more. I think a healthy mix of passion and hard work will take a person far in life. Love your blog, love these pictures of you two. couldn't get more adorable!!

  8. First off, anyone who rocks those serious red frames can be successful at anything they do. Second off, I too have Bieber Fever.

Anyway...I think hard work and passion can get you pretty darn far in life. But I do think there are some things that can't be taught. But you have that artistic spark that comes naturally to you. It is part of who you are and it always has been.

Please don't forget me when you are famous.

P.S...coming to Utah at the end of the month! We must get together. Maybe I can get a tour of your studio?

  9. You should read "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. It is seriously the most interesting book I've read in a long time. In the book he tries to explain why The Beatles were so Amazing, why Bill Gates was able to do what he did, why Asians are usually good at math...etc.

It's a very curious and thought provoking book. I finished it last week and find myself coming back to the book ALL the time.

Now the question becomes: Nature verses Nurture? Or just being born in the right time, with the right desires, and a bit of luck?

  10. oh joy, wasn't that movie such a delight?! I made my husband watch it with me, and although I was met with many protests, he actually came out of the experience with a lot of respect for him.

now onto your question, yes I totally believe that hard work, passion, and perserverance can make a person just as successful and someone who was just "born" with it. we all have special talents, and some realize what theirs are early in life and are able to hone into those and thus become a lot more successful since "practice makes perfect" than others who figure out what their talents are later in life. make sense?

  11. I just finished What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell and he has an essay about this. Sometimes genius exhibits itself early and hard (Picasso and Bieber) (I just put Bieber in the same category as Picasso. I will hang my head in shame when I finish typing) and sometimes it builds over a lifetime where there was talent early on but the real masterpieces come later in life (Cezanne).

I thought that was so interesting...like the fact that I'm struggling to really write right now doesn't mean I don't have the spark..it just means that maybe I'll publish a book when I'm 50 instead of 27.

  12. I completely agree with you! I think some people are born with amazing gift, and they are so blessed, but others of us get to develop our gifts, so we are also blessed!

  13. You know what they say: Luck is when opportunity meets talent. I think there's a lot of truth to that. I don't believe Justin Bieber, as cute as he is (and I did LOVE "Never Say Never"), is any more talented than other kids who love to sing and rock the drums -- he was just lucky (or blessed) enough to be discovered.

  14. Well, I agree with some of the others; that really, half of talent is hard work. And interest. Anybody can learn to draw if they take a class; lines aren't hard to do. However, I do think it takes the eye to make something unique. But I still think that it's the sort of thing that can be learned and focused if one tries hard enough. Yeah, there will always be prodigies and geniuses, but I still say hard work doesn't get enough credit most of the time.

  15. Thank you for this post! It is totally perfect timing because I just watched Never Say Never for the first time this past weekend on a plane ride to a gig and was shocked at how GOOD OF A MOVIE IT WAS!! I have actually been recommending it to people all this week. You'd think I had the fever!

Biebs is SUPER talented - and I guess I sort of knew that already - but seeing him as a toddler, rocking out like a prostar on those drums - I was so impressed with the authenticity of his talent. He so obviously just had to be creative and I love that. I am a musician, and am constantly struggling with working hard vs. talent. I'm thankful that I am working in a field that I feel so passionately about, but the other reason this post is perfect timing is because I am still struggling as a musician because I can't do it full time.....yet. I still have to have the ol' day job to pay those bills and get health benefits. I am constantly wracking my brain for ways to make more money as a creative freelancer, and want to figure out another way to be self-employed full time. Would love to hear your tips if you have any!

  17. All I have to say, is I've had Robbie fever ever since he played his guitar and sang to me in jr. high. OK, maybe he wasn't singing JUST to me. But it sure felt like it and I've been hooked ever since. I call that gifted.

  18. Loved the movie. I wasn't a huge fan, but took my 8yr old son to see that movie and got SUCKED in big time. Definitely have the fever. I laughed and cried throughout the movie too. It was sooo goood! I was definitely impressed at how talented he is and was at such a young age.

  19. i JUST watched that movie this past weekend, and fell in love! He is the cutest little guy EVER! I was obsessed... and a little embarassed about my 16 yr old crush :)

  20. I was totally just going to recommend "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. That book has changed my perspective on a lot of things. Fascinating.

  21. interesting question! I think that most people want to become better at something that they have a talent for! It's easier and more fun to start working on becoming better at something where you aren't starting from scratch.

But I also believe with enough determination you can do almost anything! Like me and exercise! I have no athletic abilities. but I learned to love exercising, because I wanted to!

  22. I just started following your blog and let me tell you, I'm in love with it. I also succumbed to beiber fever after watching never say never so I understand completely.

I agree that there is a definite difference between talent and hard work. In some ways working hard to succeed is more attractive because you know that the person really wanted it because they struggled more to get there than someone born with the talent.

  23. Great post Cait. I've actually thought about this same question before. I think lots of people are passionate but when you add that to hard work really, really amazing things happens.

PS: I totally saw the beibs movie in 3D. & then I got the fever. But seriously - I actually was really impressed with how hard he worked + the natural talent/passion he had, & where it's gotten him today.
